The sirens were blaring all through brain camp, bathing the corrugated metal in stripes of red. Shepard's boots pounded as he raced through the halls toward solitary, adrenaline spiking higher, higher as radio chatter carried the sound of battle to him.

"Shep, we've got them locked in!" one of the students called, echoed a second later by, "Cafeteria secured!"

It was a coup. Finally, after all this time, he and his fellow students had risen up to fight back...and all it had taken was Kaidan sacrificing himself to throw the first blow.

He grit his teeth, ignoring the dry scream of his muscles, the trickle of blood from the gash in his scalp, and took the corner fast. There were two scared-looking guards at the end of the hall, lifting their guns in alarm when Shepard appeared. He gave a barking laugh and charged, rushing through the hall in a flare of biotic power before slamming into them with the full brunt of his battle-crazed fury.

Yet even in the midst of a charge (electric, powerful), Shepard was as controlled as ever. He grabbed one by the hair and slammed her head back against the floor, knocking her unconscious. The other was trying to roll away, shields beginning to recharge--Shepard sent a focused mini-shockwave before the barrier could renew, knocking the man against the far wall. He crumpled, unconscious.

The sirens continued to wail.

"This is Shepard," he said, rising grimly to his feet. He collected their heat sinks and grabbed one of their pistols, checking the grip. It was close enough to the piece Kaidan preferred that it should do. "I've got him."

He lifted his other hand, pulling on his biotics to form a singularity--focused, small, brilliant--abutting the heavy door. Then, with a closed fist, he let it fracture, ripping the door off its hinges.

The cell they had been guarding was dark enough to make his stomach clench in renewed anger. Shepard stepped forward, still bristling with power, and swept the small room. His eyes met Kaidan's.

There was a long, heavy beat. A weighted silence. Then, swallowing, Shepard said, "We did it, Kai. Jump Zero's ours." But before the other boy could reply, the whole world flared white...and he was somewhere else entirely.
